- In 1942, the Government of Ceylon issued a five cent banknote which could be torn down the middle and used as three and two cent banknotes.
- A Rs.10,000 note issued in 1947 was used only for transactions between
banks.
- Until 2012 all Sri Lankan coins were minted in Britain. Now the Central Bank also uses mints in Slovakia and the Netherlands.
- In September 2014 the Central Bank will issue 25 new types of Rs.10 coins - one for each district.
